Intergraph Smart Instrumentation is now Octave Facets Instrumentation. If your team still calls the platform SmartPlant Instrumentation, SPI or INtools, the new name can raise practical questions about existing databases, project documentation and future upgrades.
The essential distinction is between a product rebrand and a technical change to your installed environment. Octave says the rebrand preserves the platform’s core functionality and performance. That does not mean every legacy release has the same compatibility, licensing or support arrangements.
What changed—and what the announcement does not mean
Octave became an independent company in May 2026 following its separation from Hexagon. Its Facets Instrumentation product was formerly known as Intergraph Smart Instrumentation. The software remains an engineering environment for managing instrumentation information, including instrument tags, specifications, loops and wiring.
A new brand does not, by itself, establish that an existing database needs to be migrated. It also does not confirm an upgrade path, a new license entitlement or compatibility with a particular database engine or third-party interface. Those questions require a review of the actual environment and the applicable vendor requirements.
Why SPI, INtools and SmartPlant terminology still matters
Older project specifications, drawings, training materials and handover records may refer to Smart Instrumentation, Hexagon Smart Instrumentation, SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) or INtools. These references can remain useful when identifying the history of a database or the deliverables required by a client.
Use the current product name in new descriptions while retaining the legacy reference where it provides clarity—for example, “Octave Facets Instrumentation, formerly Intergraph Smart Instrumentation.” Avoid treating the names as proof that two installations use the same software version.
Five checks before changing an instrumentation database
- Record the installed versions. Identify the instrumentation application, database platform, interfaces and relevant vendor support status.
- Assess data quality. Review duplicate tags, missing specifications, inconsistent naming and conflicting wiring or loop information before moving errors into a new environment.
- Inventory customizations. Document reports, templates, import routines, integrations and site standards that must continue to work.
- Define acceptance and recovery. Agree on representative tests, required deliverables, backups, recovery planning and the people responsible for accepting the result.
- Choose the right scope. A targeted cleanup, standards update or administration engagement may be more appropriate than a full migration. Confirm the need before selecting the solution.

How Mangan supports your team
Mangan provides engineering and database services for Octave Facets Instrumentation and legacy SPI/INtools environments. Depending on the confirmed scope, support can include database administration, audits and cleanup, standards development, reporting, training and migration planning.
Mangan is an independent engineering services provider, not a software developer or reseller, and is not affiliated with Octave or Hexagon. Direct software licensing, entitlements and vendor product-support questions to Octave. Support for a particular release or migration path must be evaluated for the project.
